Wind Damage Roof Repairs in Sydney

When the wind lifts sheets and rips off ridge caps, we put it back down properly and secured.

Wind Damage Roof Repairs

Strong westerlies and severe thunderstorm gusts do their damage by uplift. Wind gets under the leading edge of a tile, sheet or ridge cap, levers it up and either flips it off or fatigues the fixings until they let go. On exposed Sydney ridgelines and coastal blocks, even a well-built roof can lose capping and sheets in a single burst, leaving battens and sarking open to the sky.

How uplift peels a roof apart

Wind damage almost always starts at an edge or a high point: the ridge, the eaves, the gable ends. Once air gets under one element, pressure difference does the rest, and it tends to unzip along a line rather than damage one spot. That's why you'll often see a whole run of ridge caps gone, or several sheets peeled back like a tin lid, rather than random holes.

Metal roofs fail at the fasteners. Screws pull through, tek fixings shear, or the sheet fatigues around the fixing hole until it tears. Tile roofs lose the mortar-bedded capping first, then individual tiles at the perimeter. We inspect the whole windward slope because the sheet that's visibly lifted is usually not the only one that's been loosened.

Re-securing sheets, tiles and capping the right way

For metal roofs we don't just screw the old sheet back down through the same tired holes. We assess whether the sheet and its fixings can be reused, upgrade to appropriate cyclone-rated or oversize fasteners where needed, and renew any flashings that have distorted. Correct fixing pattern and screw type is what stops it happening again in the next big blow.

For tile roofs we re-lay displaced tiles, replace any that cracked on landing, and re-bed and re-point the ridge and hip capping with flexible pointing that flexes with movement instead of cracking free. Where the original bedding has failed across a run, we redo the whole run rather than patch one cap.

Checking fixings and flashings before the next front

After one wind event the roof is often primed to fail again, because neighbouring fixings have been loosened even if they held. We check fastener tightness, look for elongated screw holes, and test capping for movement across the roof. Perimeter flashings and barge boards take the brunt of uplift, so we make sure those edges are properly fixed down before we call the job finished.

What's Included

  • Inspection of the full windward slope for lifted and loosened elements
  • Re-fixing of peeled metal sheets with correct, upgraded fasteners
  • Re-laying displaced tiles and replacing any cracked on impact
  • Re-bedding and flexible re-pointing of dislodged ridge and hip capping
  • Renewal of distorted or torn perimeter flashings and barge cappings
  • Fixing checks across the roof to reduce the risk of repeat uplift

Frequently Asked Questions

The wind only took a few caps -- why check the whole roof?

Because uplift loosens fixings you can't see from the ground. Caps and sheets next to the failed ones are often barely holding and will go in the next gust. We check the whole windward slope so the repair addresses the real risk, not just the visible gap.

Can you reuse the sheets that blew off?

Sometimes, if they're not creased, torn around the fixing holes or badly bent. Often the safer call is to replace peeled sheets and upgrade the fasteners, because a sheet that's been folded back will never sit and seal the way a new one does.

Why does my ridge capping keep lifting in the wind?

Usually because the mortar bedding has gone brittle and cracked away from the tiles, so there's nothing holding the caps down. We re-bed and re-point with flexible pointing that moves with the roof, which holds far better than rigid mortar under wind load.

How quickly can you make a wind-damaged roof safe?

We aim to get to Sydney storm jobs the same day to tarp openings and remove anything at risk of blowing off and causing injury. Full re-fixing follows once we can work safely, ideally in calmer, dry conditions so fasteners and pointing set properly.
