Cyclone and Severe Wind Roof Repairs

Extreme wind demands extreme fixing -- we rebuild roofs to hold in the next big blow.

Cyclone Roof Repairs

Cyclonic and severe wind events push roofs far beyond ordinary storm loads. It's not just about replacing what blew off, it's about fixing the reason it left. Repairs after these events need to address the whole load path, from the sheet or tile down through the battens and into the frame, and to use fixings rated for the wind region. A like-for-like repair to the old standard just sets up the same failure.

How cyclonic wind loads overwhelm a roof

In extreme wind the roof experiences huge uplift and pressure cycling that works fixings loose and can rip whole sections free at once. Failure follows the weakest link in the chain: if the sheet is strong but the batten fixing is weak, the batten and sheet leave together. That's why cyclone repair is about the complete tie-down system, not just the visible cladding.

Debris impact compounds it. Flying material tears cladding and breaks tiles, opening the roof so that internal pressure spikes and blows more of it off from the inside. Understanding this cascade is what separates a repair that lasts from one that fails again.

Cyclone-rated fixings and upgraded tie-downs

We repair and rebuild using fixings and tie-down details appropriate to the wind classification for the site, in line with Australian Standards. That can mean cyclone washers, closer screw spacing, oversize or additional fasteners, and proper tie-down of battens to rafters and rafters to walls. The aim is a continuous, engineered load path so uplift is resisted at every connection.

Where the existing structure isn't up to the loads, we say so and involve structural input rather than papering over it. Upgrading the fixing system during a repair is the single most valuable thing you can do to improve how the roof performs in the next severe event.

Full structural check after a severe event

Severe wind stresses the entire frame, so we inspect connections and members that look intact but may be cracked or pulled at the joints. We check batten-to-rafter and rafter-to-wall connections, look for movement at the ridge, and assess flashings and edge fixings that take the highest suction. Only once the structure and tie-downs are sound do we complete the cladding and weatherproofing.

What's Included

  • Assessment of the full roof load path and tie-down system
  • Repair and re-fixing using cyclone-rated fasteners and washers
  • Upgraded batten-to-rafter and rafter-to-wall tie-down connections
  • Replacement of debris-torn cladding and impact-damaged tiles
  • Renewal of high-suction edge flashings and barge fixings
  • Structural connection check and weatherproofing to Australian Standards

Frequently Asked Questions

Sydney isn't a cyclone region -- why would I need this?

Severe thunderstorms, east coast lows and downbursts can produce cyclone-like gusts here, and exposed or elevated sites cop very high wind loads. Repairing to an upgraded fixing standard makes sense wherever a roof has already failed under wind, regardless of the formal region classification.

What's different about a cyclone-rated repair?

It focuses on the whole tie-down chain, not just the cladding. We use rated fasteners, closer fixing spacing and proper connections from sheet to batten to frame, so uplift is resisted at every joint. An ordinary repair often just re-attaches the surface to a weak structure.

Can you upgrade my fixings without replacing the whole roof?

Often yes. If the cladding is sound but the fixings failed, we can renew and upgrade the fasteners and tie-downs while reusing serviceable sheets. Where the cladding itself is torn or fatigued, replacing those sections is part of getting the load path right.

Will you involve an engineer?

Where the existing structure can't carry the wind loads, or the connections need certified upgrading, we bring in structural input rather than guessing. We'd rather be honest that a repair needs engineering than sign off something that fails in the next severe blow.
