Colorbond Roofing for Sydney Homes

The pre-painted steel roof that suits most Sydney homes when it is installed properly.

Colorbond Roofing

Colorbond is pre-painted steel sheeting made to an Australian formula, and it is the roof most Sydney homeowners land on when they replace old tiles or a tired metal roof. It is light, quick to install and comes in a fixed palette of colours with a factory-baked finish. The catch is that a Colorbond roof is only as good as its fixings, flashings and fall. We install it to spec so it does not oil-can, leak at the laps or fade before its time.

Choosing the right Colorbond grade for your suburb

Not every Colorbond product is the same steel. Standard Colorbond suits most inland Sydney suburbs, but if you are within a few hundred metres of the surf at Bondi, Cronulla or the Northern Beaches, salt attacks bare steel and cut edges fast. There we specify the marine-grade coastal product, which uses a heavier metallic coating to resist that salt-laden air.

Colour matters too, and not just for looks. Lighter colours reflect more heat, which keeps roof cavities cooler through a Sydney summer and takes load off your air conditioning. Darker charcoals and blacks look sharp but run hotter, so we talk through the trade-off before you commit rather than after the sheets are up.

Why fixings and roof pitch decide whether it leaks

Colorbond sheeting is fastened with sealed screws through the crest or the pan depending on the profile, and every screw needs a sound rubber washer clamped to the right tension. Overdriven screws crush the washer and invite leaks; underdriven screws let the sheet lift in a storm. We set fastener tension by hand-feel and pattern, not a guess.

Pitch is the other decider. Corrugated and trimdek profiles have a minimum recommended fall, and laying them flatter than that traps water at the laps. If your roof is low-pitched we will steer you to a profile rated for it, or a concealed-fix system, rather than forcing standard sheeting where it will pond.

Insulation, sarking and condensation

A steel roof with nothing under it will sweat. Warm moist air from inside the home hits the cold underside of the sheet overnight and condenses, dripping back onto your ceiling and insulation. We lay anti-condensation sarking or a blanket under the sheets so that moisture is managed and your batts stay dry, which also cuts the drumming sound of Sydney rain.

What's Included

  • Site measure and profile recommendation (corrugated, trimdek or concealed-fix)
  • Coastal or standard grade specified to suit your suburb's salt exposure
  • Anti-condensation sarking or insulation blanket under the sheets
  • Sealed fasteners set to correct tension with sound washers
  • New ridge capping, barge and valley flashings colour-matched to the roof
  • Old roof removal, disposal and a clean, swept site on completion

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I lay Colorbond straight over my old tiles?

We do not recommend it. The old tiles add dead weight, hide rotten battens and stop us inspecting the frame. We strip the tiles, check and replace any failed timber, then install new battens or top-hats before the steel goes on so the roof is sound underneath.

Will a dark Colorbond roof make my house hotter?

Darker colours absorb more heat than lighter ones, so the roof cavity does run warmer. Good insulation and a ventilated cavity offset most of that. If keeping the home cool is a priority we will suggest a lighter colour, but the final choice is yours.

How long does a Colorbond roof last in Sydney?

Installed correctly on a sound frame, decades. Coastal salt, tree debris and ponding water are what shorten that life. Using the right grade for your location and keeping gutters clear does more for longevity than anything else.

Is Colorbond noisy in the rain?

Bare sheeting can drum, but with sarking and ceiling insulation underneath it is quieter than most people expect. We install both as standard, so the difference between a tile and steel roof indoors is minor.
