Colorbond Roof Leak Repairs in Sydney
Colorbond doesn't fail on its own -- it leaks where the coating was breached or the detailing was rushed.

Colorbond steel is a tough, coated product, and when it leaks the cause is almost always something done to it rather than the material giving up: a fastener installed wrong, coating scratched during works and left to rust, cut edges that were never sealed, or flashing details that don't suit the profile. Repairing Colorbond well means protecting the coating, matching the colour and keeping any manufacturer warranty intact -- not slapping incompatible sealant over the problem.
How Colorbond leaks start
The coating system is what makes Colorbond last, so leaks track back to wherever that coating was compromised. Overdriven or wrong-type fasteners crush washers and dimple the sheet; foot traffic and dragged materials scratch the surface; and swarf (the fine steel filings left by cutting or drilling) rusts into the coating and creates pinholes. Each of these breaches lets moisture reach the steel and corrosion follows.
Cut edges are a specific weak point. Where a sheet has been trimmed on site the raw steel edge is exposed, and if it was not treated it can creep-rust into the coated area. We look hard at cut ends, penetrations and anywhere the sheet has been worked after it left the factory.
Flashings and dissimilar metals
A lot of 'Colorbond leaks' are really flashing leaks -- aprons, barges and wall flashings with too little upstand, poor lap or the wrong profile fit letting water track behind them. We correct the flashing geometry rather than relying on sealant to bridge a gap that shouldn't exist.
We also watch for dissimilar metals. Copper or uncoated steel in contact with, or draining onto, Colorbond causes accelerated galvanic corrosion that eats through the coating. Old lead flashings, copper pipes and mismatched fasteners are common offenders, and we replace them with compatible materials so the repair doesn't just start the problem again.
Repairing without wrecking the coating or warranty
Our repairs are chosen to keep the roof's protection intact. We use manufacturer-compatible fasteners and sealants, treat and touch up minor coating damage properly, and colour-match replacement sheeting and flashings so the fix isn't an eyesore. Where a section is beyond touch-up we replace the affected sheets in matching Colorbond.
We also work in a way that respects any remaining product warranty -- using correct fasteners, avoiding incompatible sealants and cleaning swarf away rather than leaving it to rust. If a repair would compromise a warranty we tell you before we do it, not after.

Frequently Asked Questions
Isn't Colorbond supposed to never leak?
Colorbond is durable, but it leaks where its coating gets breached or the detailing is poor -- wrong fasteners, scratches, unsealed cut edges or bad flashings. The material rarely fails on its own. Fix the breach or the detail correctly and a Colorbond roof will keep performing for a very long time.
Will a repair void my Colorbond warranty?
It can, if the wrong fasteners or incompatible sealants are used or swarf is left to rust. We repair using manufacturer-compatible materials and correct methods to protect any remaining warranty. If a particular repair would compromise it, we'll tell you before we start, not after.
Can you match my Colorbond colour?
Yes. Colorbond comes in a defined range of colours, so we identify yours and source matching sheeting and flashings. Replacement panels and touch-ups are colour-matched so the repair blends in rather than leaving an obvious patch on your roof.
Why is there rust on my fairly new Colorbond roof?
Usually swarf -- fine steel filings from cutting or drilling left on the surface after installation -- or contact with dissimilar metals like copper. Both rust into the coating and cause pinholes. We remove the cause, treat the affected area and stop it spreading before it becomes a leak.
