Roof Valley Repairs in Sydney
Your valleys carry more water than any other part of the roof — keep them clear and sound.

A valley is the metal channel where two roof planes meet and funnel their combined runoff to the gutter. Because it concentrates water from a large area into a narrow tray, a valley leaks faster and does more damage than almost any other roof fault. On Sydney's older tiled homes the valley iron is often the first component to rust through, and on any roof a blocked valley will back up and push water sideways under the tiles.
Common causes of valley leaks
The two big causes are corrosion and blockage. Old galvanised valley irons rust from the bottom up because they stay damp long after rain has stopped, so pinholes appear along the centre line where water sits. Once that happens the leak is directly into your ceiling. Coastal salt air and overhanging trees that keep the valley shaded and wet both speed this up.
Blockage is the other regular offender. Leaves, moss and washed-down debris pack into the valley, especially where it narrows near the gutter. Water then dams up, rises above the edge of the valley tray and runs under the adjoining tiles. Heavy Sydney downpours make this obvious fast — a valley that copes in light rain can overflow in a storm.
How we repair and replace valley irons
For a rusted valley we lift the tiles along both sides, remove the old iron, and fit a new Colorbond or Zincalume valley tray with the correct width and upstands so water can't escape the sides. We re-lay the tiles with the right overhang into the valley and re-bed as needed, keeping the mortar back from the water channel so it doesn't dam debris.
Where the valley is sound but leaking at a join or the top intersection, we re-lap and reseal rather than replace. We also check the valley clips and the batten support underneath, because a sagging valley board lets the tray flex and crack. The finished valley should be smooth, correctly sloped and free of mortar snots that catch leaves.
Keeping valleys clear after the repair
Because valleys concentrate debris, they benefit from being checked as part of regular maintenance, especially under trees. We can fit valley leaf guards or mesh where the tree load is heavy, though these need the right specification so they don't themselves become a debris trap.
If your home sits below eucalypts or has a low-pitch valley that drains slowly, a twice-yearly clear-out before and after the storm season is cheap insurance against a ceiling repair. We'll give you a straight recommendation based on what we actually find up there.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know if my valley is rusted through?
Look along the centre of the valley for rust streaks, dark pitting or actual pinholes, and check for a ceiling stain directly below the valley line inside. On older galvanised valleys, rust starts underneath where water sits, so it's often worse than it looks from above.
Why does my valley only leak in heavy rain?
That's the classic sign of a blockage rather than a hole. Debris dams the valley, and in a heavy Sydney downpour the water rises above the tray and runs under the tiles. In light rain the flow stays low enough to drain, so the leak seems to come and go.
Can you replace a valley without redoing the whole roof?
Yes. We lift only the tiles along both sides of the valley, replace the tray, then re-lay and re-bed those tiles. The rest of the roof is untouched. If we find broken tiles during access we'll match and swap them and let you know first.
Are valley leaf guards worth it?
If you're under gums or heavy tree cover, yes — they cut how often the valley clogs. But they must be the right mesh and profile, or they trap fine debris and make things worse. We only recommend them where they genuinely help and fit them so water still flows freely.
