Tile Roof Repairs Across Sydney

From a single slipped tile to failed pointing across the whole ridge, we get tiled roofs watertight.

Tile Roof Repairs

Tiled roofs are common right across Sydney and they last for decades, but the mortar that holds them together doesn't. The bedding and pointing under your ridge capping is the first thing to fail, and individual tiles crack from foot traffic, falling branches and simple age. We repair tiled roofs properly, whether that means swapping a few tiles or re-doing the pointing along every ridge and hip.

Slipped, cracked and broken tiles

Tiles slip when the nibs that hook them over the batten wear or snap, or when someone's walked the roof carelessly. A slipped tile leaves a gap that funnels water straight onto the sarking. We lift the surrounding tiles, replace or re-seat the affected ones, and check the battens underneath while we're up there.

Matching old tiles is half the battle. Terracotta and concrete profiles have changed over the years, and colours fade, so we source the closest match we can and blend replacements in from less visible areas where a perfect match matters.

Bedding and pointing that's blown out

The mortar bedding that beds your ridge capping onto the tiles cracks and crumbles over 15 to 20 years, and the flexible pointing on top eventually lets go. Once that happens, capping loosens and water gets under it. We rake out the old material and re-bed and re-point with a flexible pointing compound that moves with the roof instead of cracking straight back out.

Why tile roofs leak in Sydney weather

Sydney gets sudden, heavy downpours that overwhelm a tiled roof with even a small defect. Wind-driven rain pushes water sideways under tiles and up behind flashings, so a tiny fault that never leaks in gentle rain will pour through in a southerly buster. That's why we test repairs and check the whole roof rather than just the spot you noticed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you match my old roof tiles?

We do our best. Older terracotta and concrete profiles are often discontinued, so we source the closest available match and, if colour matters, blend new tiles in from a hidden section and move the aged tiles to the visible area. We'll show you the match before committing.

What's the difference between bedding and pointing?

Bedding is the mortar that beds the ridge capping onto the tiles underneath. Pointing is the flexible top layer that seals and finishes it. Bedding gives strength; pointing gives weatherproofing and flex. When either fails, capping loosens and water gets in, so both usually need attention together.

Is it worth repairing an old tile roof or should I replace it?

If the tiles themselves are sound and it's mainly the pointing and a few cracked tiles, repair is well worth it. If tiles are widely delaminating or crumbling, replacement can be the better spend. We'll inspect and give you an honest recommendation either way.

Can walking on the roof crack more tiles?

It can, which is why technique matters. We step on the lower third of each tile where it's supported by the one below, spread our weight and use roof ladders on steep or brittle sections. Careless foot traffic is a leading cause of cracked tiles, so we take care.
