Metal Roof Restoration Sydney

Stop rust in its tracks and recoat a tired steel roof before corrosion wins.

Metal Roof Restoration

Metal roofs fail from the fasteners and the low points outward. Old lead-head nails and rusted screws let water sit around the fixing, laps and flashings lose their seal, and once the protective coating wears through, surface rust turns into holes. Metal roof restoration catches this while it's still fixable: we treat the rust, replace corroded fasteners, reseal the laps and flashings, and recoat with a system built to protect steel for years.

Why metal roofs corrode where they do

Rust starts where water lingers or the coating is breached: around fasteners, along overlaps, in valleys and behind flashings, and anywhere two dissimilar metals touch. Near the Sydney coast, airborne salt accelerates the whole process. On older galvanised iron the zinc coating eventually gives out and the bare steel starts flaking, which is a different problem from a modern coated sheet that's simply faded.

We work out whether you have old galvanised iron or a newer coated steel roof, because the age, the metal type and the distance from the surf all change how aggressively rust will keep advancing and whether restoration will hold.

Rust treatment and fasteners

Surface rust is wire-brushed or ground back to sound metal, then treated with a rust converter or primer before recoating. Where corrosion has eaten right through a sheet, patching won't last and we replace the sheet. Rusted screws and old lead-head nails are swapped for new roofing screws with sound washers, because a fresh coat over failing fixings just hides the next leak.

Sealing laps, flashings and recoating

The overlaps between sheets and the flashings around walls, penetrations and ridges are where wind-driven Sydney rain gets in. We reseal these with the correct sealant and re-fix loose flashings before any coating goes on. The recoat is a primer plus a metal roof membrane system that bonds to steel, resists UV and salt, and can be tinted to refresh the colour.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you restore a rusty metal roof or does it need replacing?

If rust is on the surface and the sheets are still sound, we can grind it back, treat it and recoat. Where corrosion has eaten right through the steel, those sheets are replaced. If most of the roof is holed, replacement is the honest option. We'll tell you which after inspecting.

How long will a restored metal roof last?

A properly treated and recoated steel roof commonly gets 10 to 15 years from the coating system before it needs refreshing, longer if you're away from the coast. Salt-heavy beachside locations shorten that. We'll give you a realistic figure and the coating manufacturer's warranty.

Do you replace the old screws?

Yes. Rusted screws and old lead-head nails are a common leak source, so we replace them with new roofing screws and sound washers as part of the restoration. Coating over failing fasteners just hides the next leak, so this step isn't optional in our work.

Will restoration reduce roof noise or heat?

A recoat itself won't insulate, but a light-coloured or reflective coating reduces heat gain and can lower attic temperatures. If noise or heat is a real concern, we can talk through under-sheet options separately. The primary benefit of restoration is stopping rust and leaks.
