Gutters & Drainage

Stormwater Drainage Solutions in Sydney

Getting roof water off the roof is only half the job — it has to leave the property.

Stormwater Drainage

Your gutters and downpipes can be perfect, but if the stormwater at ground level can't take the water away, it pools against footings, floods garden beds and undermines paths. Stormwater drainage is where the roof water finally leaves your property, and it's the part most often neglected. We connect downpipes into proper drainage, clear blocked underground lines, and make sure Sydney's downpours end up in the system, not in your subfloor.

Where roof water goes after the downpipe

Once water leaves the downpipe it should enter an underground stormwater line and discharge to the street, a legal point of discharge, or an approved detention or soakage system — not just onto the ground. Many older Sydney homes have downpipes that simply spill at the base, washing soil away from the footings and keeping the subfloor damp. Connecting them into proper drainage protects the structure.

In heavy rain the volume off even a modest roof is significant, so undersized or partially blocked underground lines back up and force water out at the downpipe base or the lowest inspection point.

Blocked and broken underground lines

Underground stormwater lines block with silt, root intrusion and collapsed sections, especially older earthenware pipes. The symptom is usually a downpipe or pit that gurgles and backs up in heavy rain. We locate and clear the blockage where we can, and where a line has collapsed or been invaded by roots we can advise on repair or replacement of that section.

Pits, spreaders and legal discharge

Depending on your block, roof water may need to go to a stormwater pit, a spreader that disperses it safely across the ground, or a legal point of discharge to the street or easement. Getting this right matters — dumping water onto a neighbour's land or against a retaining wall causes problems and disputes. We set up discharge that moves the water where it's meant to go.

Frequently Asked Questions

My downpipe just dumps water at the base — is that a problem?

Often yes. Water pooling at the downpipe base soaks the ground around your footings, keeps the subfloor damp and washes soil away over time. Connecting it into a stormwater line or a spreader that carries the water clear of the building protects the structure and your garden.

Why does my stormwater pit overflow in heavy rain?

Usually the underground line downstream is blocked or undersized, so water can't clear fast enough and backs up at the pit. Silt, tree roots and collapsed old pipes are common causes. We locate the blockage and clear it, or advise on the section that needs repair if a pipe has failed.

Where is my roof water legally allowed to discharge?

It depends on your block — typically to the street kerb, a legal easement, or an approved detention or soakage system. It can't simply be directed onto a neighbour's property. We set up discharge to an appropriate point so you're not creating a drainage dispute with the people next door.

Can tree roots really block a stormwater pipe?

Absolutely — roots seek out the moisture and enter through joints in older earthenware lines, then grow into a dense mat that traps silt and blocks flow. If your stormwater backs up in every storm, root intrusion in an old line is a very common cause worth investigating.
